Building in Marion County: what changes here

Several permit offices, decided by address. Unincorporated Marion County permits through Marion County Building Safety at 2710 E. Silver Springs Blvd. in Ocala, which moved to its Civic Access online portal in November 2025. Inside Ocala city limits, the City of Ocala Building Division issues permits through eTRAKiT. The City of Dunnellon issues its own permits too. An Ocala mailing address does not mean the city issues the permit, so we confirm by parcel.

Inland flooding, not surge. The county sits about 110 feet above sea level, and its flood information describes flash flooding in low areas and near water rather than coastal flooding. The City of Ocala is a Community Rating System Class 3 community, which gives a 35 percent flood insurance discount in its high-risk zones.

Wind, more than water. Storms here mostly mean wind and power loss. Hurricane Milton in 2024 knocked out power to about 47,000 Marion County customers. Storm work is usually roof-driven leaks, fallen trees, and interior water damage.

The $7,500 permit exemption. Since July 1, 2026, Florida's permit exemption lets owners of single-family homes skip a building permit for work under $7,500, except electrical, plumbing, mechanical, gas, structural work, and work in a flood hazard area.

Contractor insurance on file. Marion County no longer registers state-certified contractors, but it does require proof of insurance with each permit application. Ask any contractor for theirs.
